Water runs downhill so look for low valleys where water can be found pooling or in streams. A clear moving stream is your best bet. Look for bright green vegetation. Also cottonwoods, sycamores and seep willows. Any wet soil can be dug until the whole begins to refill.

Naturally the most challenging place to find water. Here you are looking for plants as they are your best indicator of a water source. If you find an area with numerous plants in the middle of nowhere, likely there is water underground. just dig down until the hole begins to fill with water. Push a shirt into the hole to act like a filter to keep the sand out. Spring water found in this manner is usually ok to drink, but test for unpleasant smells or taste. In all cases, you never know if an animal died in the water upstream or what chemicals could have leached in over time. Be warned. You are not the only species out looking for water in this type of environment. Any number of scorpions, swarming insects and predatory animals could be using your watering hole as well. Remember that the larger the scorpion the less likely poisonous.
