Spear Making

Picture
The making of the first spear was a huge step for us as a species. Now we could keep our distance from our game or attacker. Thrown, the spear is a powerful projectile transferring the full weight of the staff and into the tiny tip of the flintknapped spearhead. This causes an immediate laceration and more damage as the animal runs with it.
Held, it provides strong defense at a distance to ward off any charging beast. Used in a machine, it allows for instant killing in a precise and predetermined fashion.Simply sharpening a stick is permissable but adding a weighted point can help with trajectory and killing ability.

Flintknapping is needed for the stone spearhead and a cord must be fashioned or scavenged to hold it together, but nothing that can't be made fairly quickly. The basics here is a comfortably heavy, hardwood straight branch with a V cut into one end. The flintknapped spearhead is inserted into the V and cord is wrapped around to secure everything. Keep in mind that the spearhead does not need to be made out of stone if other malleable, yet strong materials are available.
