Igloo

Picture
The classic igloo can be constructed if the snow is wet enough to be packed or if permafrost is present.

1. First, dig out a one foot deep circular area for the foundation. Don't go too deep or it will be too hard to build up enough body heat for warmth inside.

2. Next cut out enough blocks to encircle the rim of the hole. Place the blocks leaving one out for the door.  Next carve down a gentle slope all the way around  the top of your first row of blocks. Now when you place your blocks you will build a circular ramp that will lead the blocks into a keystone point at the top. Obviously care should be taken when placing  the last block. If done properly, the physics of the circular keystone will hold all the blocks together. Finally fill in all the cracks to complete, pulling a final block in behind you. Once again remember to poke some small air holes for ventilation.
